I'm Christine Gresser, and I'm on the steering committee of our church's Twenties and Thirties group. Our group is reorganizing and revamping, and I'm benchmarking Young Adult Group descriptions at other UU churches. If you are in a leadership position in your local YA group (or if you don't mind obtaining this info from a leader), would you be willing to post your group's description, mission statement, etc., to me (onlist or offlist)? Questions: 1. What is the purpose of your YA group? (what components make up your group's purpose? i.e. social, worship, social action, leadership development, learning/religious ed, etc.) 2. Is your YA group connected to a congregation, and if so, do many/most YA group members participate actively in the church? Thanks! Christine Gresser TnT (Twenties n Thirties) Thos. And, for anyone who is on this list and who is IN a YA group but is not the LEADER of the group, would you mind forwarding my questions to your leader(s)? Thanks so much! Thanks to Heather M. in Boston for your helpful reply - the first one (and the only one so far...)! Hope to hear back from lots of folks. I will be glad to share the wisdom I get from you all. We're a part of a small church in a suburb of Cleveland, and we have a very small (<10 active members) but stable group. Everyone in our group is very active in the church, and we have our meetings right after church on Sundays (usually over lunch). We actually don't have an official description or mission statement. We do a lot of social activities, but we're also very active at Pride and we'll be leading adult sex education workshops for our chuch starting next month. Christine, I'm glad you started this topic. I'll be interested in reading how other young adult groups work. I'm Karen Barrett-Wilt and I'm the Young Adult and Campus Ministry Program Coordinator at First Unitarian Society in Madison, WI. I'm new to the job, so I can't answer your questions with years of experience behind me, but I can tell you what's going on here now. Our campus group (Madison Unitarian Universalist Young Adult and Campus Ministry, or MUUYACM) meets every Thursday evening for a worship service during the academic year, and every other week in the summer. Sometimes the services are led by our members, but more often we have someone come and speak briefly and lead a discussion. We are trying to have a social hour after services once or twice a month, but that's not firmly organized yet. We also go to the SOA vigil/protest in Georgia every year, and we have a fall and spring retreat. We usually have around 15 people at services, mostly college students, but we have a few people in their later 20s and 30s attend. Most people in this group are not involved in the FUS congregation. (I don't know if this is relevant to your re-forming group - I'm including it just in case.) We are also starting a young adult (20s and 30s) group, so I, too, am interested in what other people have to say about their young adult groups! We had an organizational meeting which about 25 people attended, and we're trying to organize a social, low-key event every month (potluck, movie, etc), as well as a coffee hour/brunch or something on Sundays. People are interested in a monthly hike, there may be a knitting group forming, and we'll see from there! We're hoping to have a good mix of people, so we're having family-friendly events and/or offering childcare at our events right now. The purpose of this group is to form a community for the young adults in our congregation. We are a very large congregation, and you won't necessarily see the same people at services every Sunday (and to complicate matters, we also have a Saturday service), so we're trying to provide an opportunity for young adults here to connect with one another. Additional goals might be added later as the group develops. The young adults in this group are involved with the congregation as a whole to varying degrees. We have a minister who spends a portion of his time and is very involved with these two groups, and he often leads the MUUYACM services. Looking forward to seeing what other groups are doing! -Karen Karen Barrett-Wilt Young Adult and Campus Ministry Program Coordinator First Unitarian Society voice mail: 608-233-9774 x131 ________________________________________________________________________ __ From: cuuyan-chat-bounces at uuyan.org [mailto:cuuyan-chat-bounces at uuyan.org] On Behalf Of Christine Gresser Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 9:50 AM To: cuuyan-chat at uuyan.org Subject: [C*UUYAN-Chat] Greetings, intro and question Greetings, I just subscribed to this list, and this is my first post.
