========================================================

1. Welcome from Emily Dulcan of the C*UUYAN Steering Committee =========================================================

Dear UU young adults and allies,

The most recent monthly update to all students, staff and faculty at the University of Missouri, where I attend graduate school, included an announcement about a speaker coming to campus to present "factual and logical" information about abortion with the goal of making it "unthinkable." Indeed, abortion seems to me one of those things that is - almost - unthinkable. If I were faced with an unexpected pregnancy, I would surely undergo one of the most difficult moral and spiritual struggles of my life, and I honestly can't say what my final decision would be. But I can say that I fiercely support every woman's right to make that private choice for herself.

The more I think and read about the raging abortion debate, the more I understand that this is not just a "moral" or "religious" issue. It is a class issue, even more so now that South Dakota has passed a law banning all abortions that are not conducted to save the life of the mother. We are getting dangerously close to a time when women and families are not only going to be limited in their moral decision making, but when only families with money can have access to abortions.

As a young adult Unitarian Universalist, I plan to engage people on the spiritual and social implications of limiting poor women's choice to have an abortion. This is why I organized a group of concerned students and faculty at MU to speak to our visiting lecturer AND why I have helped C*UUYAN become a member of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC).

The RCRC is a strong network of pro-choice religious organizations that organizes Catholics, Jews, Protestants, and UUs, and provides extensive resources for political advocacy, and coalition-building. As an RCRC member, C*UUYAN has agreed to share our resources and mobilize our network to keep abortion legal and promote faith-inspired dialogue about abortion, sex education and women's rights.

The Steering Committee is still figuring out what this means, still identifying our unique young adult UU strengths, still refining the relationship between our UU faith and the right to an abortion. We need to hear from you to fully appreciate our pro-choice position, and we need you in order to realize a working relationship with the RCRC.

Do you want to learn about lobbying your members of Congress to keep abortion legal? Do you want to understand the Catholic theology that says it's okay to have an abortion? Do you teach the OWL (Our Whole Lives) comprehensive sex ed curriculum at your church? Take a look at the RCRC and SYRF (Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom) Web sites below to learn more about the network of which C*UUYAN is now a part, and contact me if you have ideas about how to get us more involved.

Jay's done everything from working on farms and boats to running off and joining the circus. 8. Field Testers needed for Young Adult OWL: Our Whole Lives for Young Adults!

=====================================================

UU Congregations & Campus Groups:

Call for Fall 2006 field-testers for. . .

Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Young Adults

A new component of the comprehensive sexuality education series,
designed for young adults, ages 18-35

The Lifespan Faith Development staff group of the Unitarian Universalist Association is seeking congregations and campus groups to field-test a 14-workshop sexuality and religious education program. Coupled with Sexuality and Our Faith: a Companion to Our Whole Lives for Young Adults, field testers will offer a workshop series that connects sexual development with spiritual and religious growth.

Though the previously-published Our Whole Lives for adults can be used with young adults, the new Our Whole Lives for young adults will focus more intently on the sexual developmental issues of younger adults: forming relationships, making decisions about commitment and family, coming to terms with one's sexual identity, and grappling with newfound freedoms. Further, the young adult Our Whole Lives includes more information about safer sex and the biology of sexuality than does Our Whole Lives for adults.

Site Requirements

· A gender-diverse co-leadership team of two to four adults, each having been trained as Our Whole Lives facilitators for another component of the curriculum.

· Ten to twenty young adult participants.

Program Workshop Sessions

·                                 Sexual Expression

Opus 2006 - Heartstrings: Welcome Home - August 11-16, 2006

What is the meaning of family? What are we willing to do to find our true home? Is it a comfort to know that you are never truly alone, or do you seek the peacefulness of solitude? Are we each wanderers in search of home, or do we try to create it where we are right now? No matter what home and hearth mean to us, many of us seek a sacred space for solace, for joy, and for serenity. Come join a community of friends and peers at Heartstrings: Welcome Home, this year's spiritual retreat for C*UUYAN. Here we will explore our own dreams of family, the power of friendship, and the resilience of home.
