1. Welcome from Elandria Williams of the Young Adult & Campus Ministry Office
========================================================
Hello UU Young Adults and Allies,
My name is Elandria Williams and I am half of the Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism coordinator team from the Young Adult and Campus Ministry Office. Laurel Albina and I just finished our work in the ¼ time position we have been sharing since January 2006. I have been asked many times throughout my three years working within the Young Adult and Campus Ministry Community what anti-oppression and ant-racism work means. Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism transformation means that our UU YACM community and movement is open and inviting to everyone that would like to become Unitarian Universalist and be involved in the UU Young Adult and Campus Ministry community. I think that if we move toward that larger vision we will as a community be a more amazing and transformative spiritual home for us all.
This position has enabled us to increase our programming for the year and next year also. One of the most amazing highlights from this year speaks to the leadership in the young adult and campus ministry community. In May 2005 the YACM office held a Training of Trainers for continental trainers and consultants to engage congregations and communities in young adult and campus ministry work. Kimberlee Tomczak, former Youth and Young Adult/Campus Ministry Director of CMWD; Kim Mason, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Director of the JPD and Gregory McConigle, interim minister at the UU Davis started talking with me about hosting Anti-Racism or Anti-Oppression trainings in there areas. We expanded upon their idea for a district training to have regional trainings in four areas that would be available for UU Young Adults and Adults to attend the trainings regardless of their district. There were four trainings at All Souls UU Church in Tulsa, OK; Church of the Restoration in Philadelphia, PA; UU Church of Davis in Davis, CA; and First Unitarian Society in Madison, WI.
This position has enabled the office to provide support and guidance to the Youth and Young Adult Anti-Racism program and trainers; GA, OPUS, and ConCentric AO/AR Coordinators; DRUUMM YaYA and the White Allies Organization; SEAT training and so much more. As part of our commitment to Young Adult of Color support we also co-sponsored and provided staff support for DRUUMM YaYA and the Youth and Young Adult White Allies Spring Summit in Chicago, IL at the Countryside UU Church in Palentine, IL and 4th Universalist in Chicago. There was also an anti-racism and anti-oppression track at each of the Regional Radius Conferences this year led by our Young Adult Anti-Racism trainers and we would like to thank United for a Fair Economy for the Racial Wealth Divide workshop and Joseph Santos-Lyons for helping to orchestrate the collaboration.
Finally, we would like to invite all of you to consider hosting an anti-racism or anti-oppression training this fall or spring. Applications for becoming a Youth and Young Adult Anti-Racism trainer are available on the YACM website so if you have a burning passion to lead UU Youth and Young Adult groups and communities in Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression transformation please consider applying.
Thanks,
Elandria Williams

3. Message from Michael Tino, UUA Director of Young Adult and Campus Ministry
========================================================
YACM Staff Transitions
Our deepest gratitude is owed to Laurel Albina and Elandria Williams, who have served the Office of Young Adult and Campus Ministry as Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression Consultants over this past year. Thanks to a temporary staff realignment, we were able to bring on Laurel and Elandria to administer our anti-racism and anti-oppression training programs, now part of the Groundwork program (www.uua.org/ya-cm/groundwork <https://mailuua.uua.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.uua.org/ya-cm/groundwork> ). Though their official consulting jobs came to an end June 30, we expect that they both will remain important parts of our program as budget and time allow.
We also bid a fond farewell to Petra Aldrich, who has served our office excellently as Program Associate since 2004. We wish her all the best in her new adventures, and know that our faith is blessed by her presence. We welcome Nancy DiGiovanni as the 2006-2008 Program Associate!
In faith,
Michael Tino

4. Greetings from Nancy DiGiovanni-your new Program Associate!
========================================================
Hello C*UUYAN Community!!
I am so very happy to be your new Program Associate in the Young Adult and Campus Ministry Office at the UUA. What does that mean, exactly? If you want to know more-give me a call in the office (see number below). But essentially, together with Michael Tino, UUA Director of Young Adult and Campus Ministry; Erik Kesting, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Office Administrator, and Joseph Santos-Lyons, UUA Director of Campus Ministry & Field Organizing-I hope to help our community grow in numbers as well as become the most spiritually alive and welcoming group that a new young adult could find!! Share the joy that you know from your C*UUYAN experience. I, myself, was one of the those strangers-invited to OPUS 2003 on a whim and my life was changed forever! In fact, I was tattooed to commemorate the experience-it was that profound. I will strive to create that experience for other seekers-and I hope you will join me in that work.
I work intimately with your elected Steering Committee and Conferences Planning Committee (of which you can be a part-elections are at ConCentric 2006, in Denton, Maryland) to ensure that C*UUYAN provides a safe, informative and spiritually challenging and fulfilling community experience for all Young Adults aged 18-35. Join the ministry of serving and inviting your peers and ask me, Michael, Joseph, Erik or any of your Steering Committee members how you can become more actively involved in the life-changing work that is Young Adult and Campus Ministry. I look forward to meeting you and serving you!!
In faith,
Nancy DiGiovanni

One-shot workshops at Opus 2006 will be one hour in length and happen once during Opus. Each Stream workshop, on the other hand, will meet four times during Opus. Each stream session lasts about 90 minutes.
All workshops proposed should reflect the theme of the conference:
Opus 2006 - Heartstrings: Welcome Home - August 11-16, 2006
What is the meaning of family? What are we willing to do to find our true home? Is it a comfort to know that you are never truly alone, or do you seek the peacefulness of solitude? Are we each wanderers in search of home, or do we try to create it where we are right now? No matter what home and hearth mean to us, many of us seek a sacred space for solace, for joy, and for serenity. Come join a community of friends and peers at Heartstrings: Welcome Home, this year's spiritual retreat for C*UUYAN. Here we will explore our own dreams of family, the power of friendship, and the resilience of home.

ConCentric 2006: - Spark the Spirit - Ignite the Fire - Be the Force for Change
-August 17-20, 2006
ConCentric is the annual business meeting and leadership development conference of C*UUYAN, the Continental UU Young Adult (18-35) Network. C*UUYAN is made up of districts comprised of grassroots groups, including local congregational young adult groups and campus ministries. ConCentric welcomes District Representatives, Young Adult and Campus Ministry (YACM) leaders, Regional Organizing Consultants, district organizers, and experienced allies, and any Unitarian Universalist young adults interested in becoming active in YACM leadership on the local, district, or continental level. As ConCentric gathers creative, experienced and new leaders from across the continent, we engage in networking, participate in workshops and trainings that offer tools and tactics to help build meaningful and sustainable religious communities across the continent and the world.
ConCentric 2006: Spark the Spirit - Ignite the Fire - Be the Force for Change will offer leaders the opportunity to nurture their spirit and learn skills to empower the communities they work with to be the force for change. Come to meet people, network, participate in the CUUYAN leadership community--with fun in all--and leave revitalized about the powerful work we do.

9. Volunteers Needed for Disaster Relief =========================================================
Attention: Volunteers Needed for Disaster Relief
St. Bernard Parish, just Southeast of New Orleans, remains one of the most devastated communities in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, now almost 9 months later. The Parish suffered severe structural damage to 100% of its homes due to massive and sustained flooding caused by breaks in the levee system. The citizens of St Bernard Parish need your help in order to recover.
There are 27,000 homes in the Parish, and almost 70,000 residents. Of those, over 30% were elderly and on fixed incomes, with the majority of other residents having low-to-mid income - very few carried flood insurance.
As a result, to help those in need, the Parish launched the St. Bernard Recovery Project on January 12, 2006. It has been a relief effort centered around bringing in Volunteers from around the country to donate their time and labor to help remove the health and safety hazards from these individual homes. Of the current list of 7000 residents needing this assistance, approximately 1500 have been completed.
For the past few months, FEMA has underwritten a Volunteer Base Camp in support of this effort. That support comes to an end this month. However, St. Bernard Parish has been coordinating this program, and will continue doing so after FEMA leaves. A new Base Camp is being established, complete with housing, showers, sanitary facilities, meals, transportation to and from the work sites, tools and equipment, and additional personal protective supplies (as needed). We expect no down-time when making the transition from one to the other.
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity has been aiding this historic effort by providing the umbrella organization under which many of our volunteers are arriving. Their website at www.habitat-nola.org <http://www.habitat-nola.org/> holds information for volunteers, as well as a calendar of availability, and everything else you need to sign up to volunteer in St. Bernard Parish.
The need is immediate, and the importance is significant. We are asking for people to volunteer their labors (in one-week intervals) to aid in this effort. Please check the Habitat for Humanity website (or call their tent in St. Bernard Parish at 504-273-6141), for more information.
Thank you,
St. Bernard Department of Recovery

12. Message from Paul Rickter, Secretary of the Unitarian Universalist Association
=====================================================
UU Congregational Leaders:
In my role as a member of the Board of Trustees and Secretary of the UUA, I am writing to notify congregational ministers and leadership of a resolution passed on June 25, 2006, by the delegates at the General Assembly in St. Louis. The text of this resolution is the following:
"Resolved, that the Delegates to General Assembly are charged to work with their congregations to hold at least one program over the next year to address racism or classism, and to report on that program at next year's General Assembly."
The bylaws of the UUA (http://www.uua.org/administration/bylaws.html#section4.16.) provide for responsive resolutions in response to a substantive portion of a report delivered at the GA either by an officer of the Association or a committee. The resolution above was moved and passed in response to reports presented by officers at the 2006 GA and the report of the Special Review Commission appointed by the UUA President and Moderator to review the events surrounding the 2005 General Assembly in Fort Worth, Texas (http://www.uua.org/TRUS/apr06/D2a-src.pdf). Both the relevant 2006 officers' reports and the Special Review Commission report concerned events at the General Assemblies that affected Unitarian Universalist communities of color, especially youth of color.
Some of our member congregations have done significant work on issues of racism, classism, and multiculturalism using resources provided by both the UUA and other sources of expertise. If your congregation has done such work, this resolution provides an opportunity to share your efforts and accomplishments with other congregations in your cluster or district so they can benefit from your experience. Resources and suggestions for programs provided by the UUA can be found at http://www.uua.org/actions/responsive/06racism/.
This resolution was not on the GA agenda. It was written by a GA delegate, offered as a responsive resolution, and overwhelmingly supported by the delegates from over 600 UU congregations. I urge you to use this resolution as an opportunity to reflect on how your congregation is engaging with the issues of anti-racism, anti-oppression, and multiculturalism. When delegates representing our congregations gather at 2007 General Assembly in Portland, Oregon, we will have an opportunity to share our experiences in congregationally-based programs on issues of racism and classism.
As we approach the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we are reminded that racism and classism remain problems in our society that we, as people of faith, are called to address. Our experiences together in community show that we have much work to do to live our UU principles more fully.
In Faith,
Paul Rickter
UUA Secretary

=========================================================
Ambitious people climb, but faithful people build.
-Julia Ward Howe
We invite you to take 20 minutes of your day to complete our 2006 Survey of UU Young Adults. The survey is designed to help the UUA Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry better serve the community. Help us faithful people build. There are 34 questions, 2 of which are open-ended inviting you to give a longer answer. It will also help us better understand the demographics of the UU Young Adult community.
The survey will be open from June 20th, 2006 through September 8th, 2006. Our goal is to receive 1000 responses. To accomplish this, we need your help. In addition to your completion of the survey, would you send this to 3 friends you know? We seek to have all UU's age 18-35 complete the survey, regardless if they are "involved" in young adult activities. Some of the questions are designed specifically for persons not involved, to learn more why. A section of the survey also asks about the needs and aspirations of young adults.
The 2006 Survey of UU Young Adults is available online only: http://express.perseus.com/perseus/surveys/1734848031/68c3197a.htm <https://mailuua.uua.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://express.perseus.com/perseus/surveys/1734848031/68c3197a.htm>
