1. Welcome from Petra Aldrich, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Program
Associate
=========================================================
Hello UU young adults and allies,
Happy New Year! We're looking at a very busy 2006 filled with all kinds
of exciting events and opportunities in which you can participate!
The final Regional UU Young Adult Anti-Oppression Training of this
season's cycle is coming up just next weekend, and a series of four
regional UU Young adult leadership conferences--called Radius
Conferences-- will be starting up the next few months. Diverse and
Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries Youth and Young Adults (DRUUMM
YaYA) is organizing a summit for UU youth and young adults of Color
(scheduled for the first weekend in March), and the UU White Anti-Racist
Allies are organizing a concurrent event for white UU youth and young
adults. And don't forget about the Comprehensive Sex-Ed Advocacy
Training in DC in late March!
If you have any questions about these or other events and programs,
please fill free to contact us! I look forward to hearing from you, and
wish you all the best for a safe, productive, and spiritual 2006.
In faith,
Petra Aldrich
Young Adult and Campus Ministry Program Associate

2. Letter from Mary Manchester, C*UUYAN Steering Committee Facilitator
=========================================================
Greetings from the CUUYAN Steering Committee! This is Mary Manchester,
the Steering Committee Facilitator, writing to you this month. The S.C.
has been fairly busy this month, considering all the holiday-time
madness that normally happens around this time of year. Here are some
brief updates on what has been going on:
Jon Schultz, the Steering Committee liaison to the District Reps,
submitted a draft to the S.C. of his letter to the Reps, a letter
written in order to maintain a stronger connection between district and
continental leadership. The letter should go out soon.
We decided on April 7-10 for the Spring Meeting, which will take place
at Camp Mardela in Denton, MD, where Opus and ConCentric 2006 will be
held.
Since the Radius Grant was not approved, we are working on rearranging
the budget to put more of our own money toward the four Radius
conferences which will be held this spring and summer. We are currently
looking at using money from Raise the Roof to fund scholarships to
Radius conferences.
The Steering Committee wrote a letter asking for reduced registration
for young adults at GA from the GA Planning Committee back in September,
but the letter did not reach the table at the GA PLANNING COMMITTEE
meeting. I recently drafted another letter, this time to be sent to the
UUA Board. We also need the help of other young adults (you!) to write
letters to the UUA Board, Bill Sinkford, at wsinkford at uua.org, and Gini
Courter, at gcourter at uua.org, telling them why you personally would
benefit from a reduced GA registration.
Sincerely,
Mary Manchester
CUUYAN Steering Committee Facilitator

8. UUA Opposes Samuel Alito's Nomination-- Students! Get involved!
=========================================================
The Unitarian Universalist Association announced its opposition to the
confirmation of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court on December 12,
2005 The UUA's opposition is based on concerns over civil liberties,
including religious liberty, the right to privacy, and due process.
In a memo to congregations explaining the UUA's decision to oppose
<http://www.uua.org/news/2005/051212_alito/memo.html> , including the
relevant General Assembly policy, the UUA's Washington Office for
Advocacy Director Rob Keithan said: "The decision to take a position on
a judicial nominee is not one the UUA takes up lightly. The nomination
of Judge Samuel Alito Jr. is significantly different from that of Chief
Justice John Roberts or Harriet Miers, in that he has an extensive
judicial record that clearly reveals his judicial philosophy on a wide
range of issues. After extensive research, Unitarian Universalist
Association staff agreed that Judge Alito's rulings revealed a pattern
of views that were outside the mainstream and hostile to established
precedent favoring civil liberties."
Campus Progress and the American Progress Action Fund want college
students and young adults to get involved in the movement to keep Samuel
Alito and his extremist views of our Supreme Court! Students on over 30
campuses across the country already are involved in the campaign. The
campaign web site www.AlitosAmerica.org
<http://www.campusprogress.org/page/m/lbmy7gvujee/zh1wpE> includes a
video, action items, as well as fact sheets
<http://alitosamerica.org/resources.php> and mock news headlines
<http://alitosamerica.org/> (spoofing the Drudge Report, Daily Kos, Fox
News, and others) showing what life might look like if Alito is
confirmed. The site also includes an online photo petition
<http://alitosamerica.org/organize.php> involving young people and
celebrities (Robert Redford <http://campusprogress.org/common/674/> was
the first to participate) taking pictures to register their concerns
about Alito. All of the various research materials generated by various
coalition organizations were instrumental in developing the campaign. Of
course, we look forward to working with all of the other coalition
organizations working to mobilize young adults on the Alito nomination
in the coming weeks.
For more information on the UUA's opposition to Samuel Alito's
nomination to the Supreme Court, please visit
