2. Letter from Tomoko Takano of the C*UUYAN Steering Committee

=========================================================

Hi Everybody,

Greetings from the Central Valley of California! It's been a little chilly and we even had hail accumulating in our back yard! It almost looked like snow, and I was reminiscing for a 1/2 a second, before I enjoyed the chilly-but-not-freezing evening. (I know I'm rubbing it in a bit, but I'm allowed to! This is my first California winter after 9 years in Michigan!!)

At our last conference call, we were getting more excited about the Radius conferences. We allocated some money for scholarships, and we really want to fund as many people as possible to be able to go to one of the four conferences. We are also trying to raise money at the conferences for Raise-the-Roof fund, so please let us know if you have contributions and/or ideas for fund raising.

Acting as interim C*UUYAN Observer to the UUA Board of Trustees, I attended the January Board meeting in Boston. It was very enlightening to attend, and a bit disconcerting. I am interested in the Board's extensive efforts for Anti Racism Anti Oppression, particularly at General Assembly. I was also glad to see that they are putting much energy into f efforts to support Youth and initiatives for the Youth. But my thought was, if we don't support the Young Adults, what happens to the Youth after they Bridge Out? There's a road that ends at a deep ravine. Without a bridge to make it to the other side, we still can't get the Bridging Youth to continue to be involved in our faith as young adults.

I hope you are planning to attend one of the Radius conferences, and we will meet you there! Have a great rest of February and March.

In Faith,

Tomoko Takano

Steering Committee, At-Large

4. Does your congregation have the Bridge Connections Program? They Should!

=========================================================

Support Youth and Young Adults - Make sure your congregation participates in the Bridge Connections Program!

The Bridge Connections program, instituted in 2003, gives graduating high school seniors a welcoming gift as they bridge into a new community. Included in this gift are information about finding local young adult and campus ministry groups, a Unitarian Universalist collection of stories and meditations, and a postage-paid reply card that entitles the new young adult to a free year of UUWorld and more!

We were enthused to have so many congregations participate in the program last year and are looking forward to giving out even more Bridge Connections gifts this year! We hope you will join our effort to build intergenerational wholeness in our communities and to support Unitarian Universalist youth and young adults through their life transitions.

You can download the 2006 Bridge Connections order form at www.uua.org/ya-cm/congregations/bridgingyouth.html.

It is in standard PDF format and easily printable. All the details you will need to know are located on the order form. The early order deadline is March 15, 2006. Remember though, the earlier we receive your order, the sooner we can get you your packets.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Erik Kesting at 617-948-6463 or ekesting at uua.org . We look forward to receiving an order from your congregation!

Best wishes,

The Office of Young Adult and Campus Ministry

7. Online Classes from the Church of the Larger Fellowship! ========================================================

The UU Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF) offers online classes, where ideas and input are supported and encouraged. These online classes provide an opportunity to stretch and exercise your mind. Anyone may participate - CLF members, non-CLF members, UUs, or not. There's something here for everyone.

This I Believe:  A Writer's Journey

Taught by the Rev. Amanda Aikman; Starts April 26th and runs six weeks

This gentle but powerful class invites participants to encounter their most deeply-held beliefs and values through an experience of writing as spiritual practice. In six online sessions and intensive between-session writing exercises, participants will develop a multi-layered statement of personal belief, emphasizing story-telling about love, work, justice, nature, and encounters with the Holy. This is not a critique class; emphasis will be on writing from the heart and supporting each other in our work. Amanda Aikman is a UU minister, spiritual director, and playwright. $40

Children's Literature: The Joy of Great Picture Books

Taught by the Rev. Keith Kron; starts approximately July 20th and runs 8 weeks

A story when nothing goes right and no one seems to notice. A mouse who collects memories. Frightened cats who help people overcome racial differences. A student gets angry at her teacher and learns about forgiveness. A caring elephant hears what no one else hears. The world of picture books has much to offer us, delightful stories, spectacular illustrations, moving messages. We will explore some wonderful children's picture books (3-5 per week) and their meanings and uses in our lives and in our Unitarian Universalist faith. Family participation is encouraged. $40

Our Way of the Spirit

Taught by the Rev. Roy Phillips and Linda Giesen; starts March 6 and runs 6 weeks

This course uses texts from our Unitarian and Universalist history to invite participants into dialogue with the great thinkers of our liberal faith. Students are asked to reflect on the ways in which their own beliefs match, diverge from or expand from the thoughts of these historical figures. $40

You may ask, why is this important for me? So I'll tell you:

->Each year, US teens get 4 million Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The Office of National AIDS Policy estimates that about two young people in the United States are infected with HIV every hour of every day. Access to accurate, in-depth comprehensive sex-ed is very important for young people. We need it, our friends need it, our peers need it. How else are we going to make informed, safe choices about sex and relationships? Sex-ed is a about young people!

-> The vast majority of people who don't get sex-ed are poor and of color. Consequently, HIV is spreading among Black and Latina women faster than among any other segment of the population. 15 % of the adolescent population in the United States is Black, yet Black teens made up 66 % of new AIDS cases among teens in 2003. Latina/Latino people are just 16 percent of the teenage population, but represented 21% of new AIDS cases among U.S. youth in 2003. That is messed up, and it is not a coincidence! Sex-ed is about racial justice!

->Most government-funded, abstinence-only sex-ed teaches that queer relationships and queer sex shouldn't even happen, much less be respectful, loving, healthy, and safe! If Queer youth don't get comprehensive sex-ed, we don't get any sex-ed, making us more likely to have un-safe sex and unhealthy relationships. Sex-ed is about Queer rights!

-> Ensuring access to comprehensive, accurate sex-ed is about respecting peoples inherent worth and dignity by giving them the tools and information they need to take charge of their sexuality, choices, and lives! UU's have been providing and advocating for comprehensive sex-ed for over three decades. Let's keep it up! Sex-ed is about our UU faith!

No matter who you are, you and your community need accurate, comprehensive sex-ed. Come and fight for it! Come learn concrete, real skills that you can use: not just on this issue, but in the rest of your life!
