========================================================
1. Welcome from Emily Dulcan of the C*UUYAN Steering Committee
=========================================================
Hello C*UUYAN community!
I am happy to be the first author of the first monthly Steering
Committee update, and if you're actually reading this, congratulations
for caring enough about C*UUYAN to make it this far. A couple of
pointers before getting into the juicy stuff:
* When I say "we" in the following text, I'm referring to C*UUYAN
leaders, specifically the Steering Committee (SC) or the SC and the
Conferences Planning Committee (CPC).
* What do "we" do? The SC is here to strengthen the UU young adult
community through planning projects, funding conferences and making up
some rules to help community events run smoothly. We are also here to
provide resources for young adults and work with the Young Adult and
Campus Ministry Office to do all of the above. The CPC plans the
wonderful conferences we may not all know but most certainly love:
ConCentric and Opus.
So, now that we're a little bit clearer, here's some business stuff for
you. I know we have already posted the minutes from the September joint
meeting of the Steering and Conferences Planning Committees, but a
number of interesting issues came up at that meeting, and we would LOVE
some feedback so we know how best to proceed.
Let's talk about the ELECTIONS PROCESS!
We're trying to find a new way to conduct C*UUYAN elections at
ConCentric and General Assembly (GA). Before GA in June of this year,
members of the SC and the CPC agreed that the election format we were
using - making candidates leave the room while everyone else says things
about them - was not accountable to the community, nor was it a healthy
way to run our elections. We felt that there was an element of talking
behind people's backs and a lack of thoughtfulness in some of these
behind-the-back discussions. The candidates being discussed weren't in
the room in order to defend themselves from criticism or learn from
others' critiques. In essence, we believe that in order for our
community to grow and progress, we need to confront conflict and
criticism directly so that everyone involved in the process can learn.
People who have problems with candidates can learn how to constructively
express their concerns, while candidates can gain some insight into
their strengths and shortcomings directly from their peers.
The question is: How do we DO this? We made a few changes to the
elections at ConCentric this year, and in many ways the outcome was less
than ideal. There are a couple of changes that we want to stick with,
however, unless we hear otherwise from you:
* We like the ideas of having the cutoff for people who want to be
candidates be at least a day before the elections, so people have time
before the question and answer and voting periods to learn about
candidates and their backgrounds.
* We also like the idea of breaking the Q & A and voting into two
separate time periods, so people have time to talk with the candidates,
and amongst themselves, after they've heard the answers to some basic
questions.
Please send us some feedback. What do you think would make the elections
process more healthy and accountable? We'll be waiting to hear from you
at ideas at uuyan.org
Thanks for reading through. You have many months of fascinating Steering
Committee news to enjoy.
In peace and faith,
Emily Dulcan

4. Help Us Create a Directory of UU Young Adult & Campus Ministry
Religious Professionals!
=========================================================
The purpose of the Directory of Young Adult & Campus Ministry Religious
Professionals is to provide a resource for networking, mentoring,
sharing of best-practices and organizing for Campus/Young Adult Ministry
in the Unitarian Universalist Association and Canadian Unitarian
Council. We are writing to seek your permission to be included in this
directory (for those who identify as having YACM in your
portfolio/ministry, lay or professional). Our deadline is Nov 15th. If

5. SOA Protest Nov 18-20 and the UUA Youth/YACM Office
=========================================================
Dear Community,
This year the UUA Youth and Young Adult & Campus Ministry Offices will
not be playing a significant role in Columbus Georgia for the SOA
Protest Nov 18-20 (www.soaw.org <http://www.soaw.org/> for more
information on this justice issue). At General Assembly, Youth Council,
and ConCentric, discussions and resolutions have been passed in support
of the mission and purpose of SOA Watch. We continue to feel strongly
about supporting this work. Since 2000, we have provided staff support
for logistics (helping book the UU Church in Columbus, announcements),
communications (set up UUIGNITE list with 200+ members), mentoring
(bringing together leadership), and on-site coordination
(transportation, information, etc). This year, however, we have not had
the staff capacity or the requests of volunteer leadership on a
realistic timeline to engage with the November protest. We are not
attending officially nor working closely with any UU Youth and Young
Adults involved in the gathering of UU Youth and Young Adults that has
happened historically. We are interested in continuing dialogue with
community members about how to best support UU Youth and Young Adults
involved in social justice events, social justice community building,
and developing the capacity for UU Youth and Young Adults to mobilize a
grassroots, collective response/action to justice issues. We believe
that our involvements in community-based mobilizations such as SOA are
an important part of our anti-oppression work in the world, grounded in
UU Principles and Faith. Our Offices have been in touch loosely with
several UU's about SOA; please contact Marissa Gutierrez at 617-948-4351
to talk further about this. Lastly, we invite you to stay connected to
UU Social Justice work through the UUIGNITE listserv
