========================================================

1. Welcome from Petra Aldrich, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Office Program Associate

=========================================================

Dear UU Young Adults & Allies,

We are nearing the end of a busy spring here in Boston. GA is just a few weeks away, and we are all working very hard to prepare. Michael Tino will be presenting a workshop about guiding youth into young adulthood, orchestrating the Bridging Ceremony and the presentation of the Anchor Congregation awards, and co-coordinating a number of receptions. With representatives from the UUA Youth Office and Washington Office for Advocacy, Michael will be co-presenting a second workshop about the joint youth and young adult Legislative Advocacy Project on comprehensive sex education, gender, and choice. Joseph Santos-Lyons is organizing and participating in several workshops and presentations on topics ranging from campus ministry to trans-racial adoption, and with a number of different groups including the UU Men's network and DRUUMM. Our office is especially excited to be working with the Youth Office and the UUA Washington Office to bring youth activist Shelby Knox to GA for a Q&A session following a screening of the documentary "The Education of Shelby Knox." This documentary chronicles Knox's efforts to institute of comprehensive sex education curriculum in her high school in Lobbock, TX.

Your GA Young Adult Caucus staff has been working extremely hard to get ready for our time in Ft. Worth. We are planning social events, daily young adult/contemporary worships, anti-oppression workshops and activities, discussion groups, and work relating to the business of General Assembly. We are especially excited this year to be working more closely with Interweave (the UU GBLTQ Organization) and with the UU White Anti-Racist Ally's Organization. If you're coming to GA, make sure you stop by our booth to pick up our daily GA Young Adult Newsletter and see a complete schedule of young adult-related and Young Adult Caucus-sponsored activities and events! You will find everything from young adult meditation groups to late-night bowling expeditions to anti-oppression dinner-and-a-movie events. We hope to see you there!

In Faith,

Petra Aldrich

2. GA Event! Witness for Criminal Justice Reform to Abolish the Death Penalty

==============================================================

Public Witness to Abolish the Death Penalty in Texas and Nationally!

Join President Bill Sinkford, Texas UUs, and our interfaith allies and advocacy partners at General Assembly! We will assemble for a rally and press conference on Saturday, June 25th at 12:45 outside the Convention Center (at 9th and Main Streets).

This action will follow the Saturday vote on the Statement of Conscience for Criminal Justice and Prison Reform and provide an opportunity for us to put our faith into action. Our faith calls on us to work for a moratorium on the death penalty. As UUs we have a reverence for life, a commitment to racial justice, and an understanding that human judgment is fallible. See http://www.uua.org/programs/justice/ga05deathpenaltyrally.pdf for details.

Sponsoring Organizations include: Unitarian Universalist Association, UUs for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Amnesty International, Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation, Social Action Committee of First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church, Ft. Worth, Texas, UUs for Drug Policy Reform, and Texas CURE (Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants).

Information and advocacy opportunities will be provided!

The Office of Young Adult and Campus Ministry is looking for a few good people to help promote young adult ministry at GA! Let's bring the conversation about young adult and campus ministry out of its current niches and into the whole denomination!

3) Passionate about young adult ministry!

We'll Give You:

1) A through understanding of our programs and resources so you can talk about them,

4. New UU AIDS Initiative -- End AIDS Now!

 ========================================================

The UUA invites you, your young adult and campus group, and your congregation to be part of the movement to END AIDS NOW!

Over 80 UU churches and fellowships are linked to the UU Global AIDS Coalition, founded by UUs in Portland, Oregon in 2003. The UUGAC aims to make a difference in the fight against the global AIDS epidemic through education and outreach, political advocacy, and direct service-but most importantly, through combining our voices and speaking out as liberal religious people.

If you would like to be part of this exciting movement please send an e-mail to Ann Pickar at apickar at cs.com

****************************************************

Start Today!

Here are a few ways you can get involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS right now:

1.  Campaign to End AIDS
 *Youth and Young Adult ACTION Institute, June 25-29
 *Cross-Country Caravans, September 16-October 8
 *Lobby Days and March to End AIDS, October 9-12

2. Wipe Out Debt! (from Jubilee USA and UUGAC)

****************************************************

1. JOIN THE CAMPAIGN TO END AIDS (C2EA)

C2EA is a diverse, new coalition of people living with HIV/AIDS and the advocates, organizations and loved ones who stand behind them. C2EA is organizing on the local, state and national level to demand that those in power halt the AIDS pandemic through full funding of HIV/AIDS initiatives and research, prevention methods guided by the best science, countering stigma, and protecting the civil rights of people living with the disease.

**Youth and Young Adult ACTION Institute
Advocacy and Communications Training to Inspire Organizing Nationwide (They love acronyms, too!)

Not going to General Assembly? Join youth and young adult AIDS activists from across the country at the C2EA Youth ACTION Institute, June 25-29, 2005 in Denver, Colorado. 150 young people, ages 16-26, will come together to learn from each other and the experts about working with media and organizing in your community around HIV/AIDS. There are a limited number of scholarships. Questions? Contact Kaytee Riek at riek at housingworks.org.

**Cross-Country Caravans

Nine caravans starting September 16th will wind their way across the country from west coast cities Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Diego; from southern cities Brownsville, Texas and Key West, Florida; and northern cities Burlington, Vermont and New York. When the caravan passes through your neck of the woods, your congregation can:
· Organize an Event (worship service, rally, educational forum, movie, dinner)
· Provide Hospitality (food, lodging, meeting space) for Caravan-errs
· Get People on the Bus to D.C.!

**Lobby Days and March

>From October 8-12, 2005, caravans from around the nation will converge for five lively days of trainings, worship services, and lawmaker visits in Washington, D.C. The week will culminate in a massive march to show the unity and strength of the AIDS movement.

Learn how you, your young adult or campus group, and your congregation can get involved with the caravans in the weeks leading up to the October Lobby Days and March at http://www.endaidsnow.org and contact info at endaidsnow.org

Contact Amelia Rose at the UUA Washington Office for Advocacy at arose at uua.org or (202) 296-4672 x21 with any questions.

2.  WIPE OUT DEBT!

Jubilee USA is collecting signed "WIPE OUT THE DEBT!" Cards to deliver to President Bush in a very visible ceremony on July 1 as he prepares to leave for the G8 Summit. The cards are eye catching and deliver a straightforward message.

UUGAC hopes to engage UU congregations, youth and friends in collecting signed cards. Our goal is to contribute 2500 messages. PLEASE JOIN US!

We know that AIDS is treatable, AIDS is preventable, and the epidemic can be stopped. But many of the countries facing high rates of HIV/AIDS infection are also handicapped in their ability to address the impact of the epidemic by the need to repay debts they owe to the wealthy countries and multilateral institutions, mainly the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

You can find further information on the Jubilee web site, www.jubileeusa.org <http://www.jubileeusa.org> . You can also download an Adobe Acrobat file of the postcard from the Jubilee USA web page and print the card yourself on heavy stock paper.

Or send an e-mail to Morrigan Phillips at coord at jubileeusa.org <mailto:coord at jubileeusa.org> . Copy Ann Pickar (apickar at cs.com <mailto:apickar at cs.com> ). Say that you are a UUGAC member and how many cards you want. We will track and report the response both by e-mail and at the UU General Assembly in June.
