1. Welcome from Petra Aldrich, YA&CM Program Associate
=========================================================
Hello Everyone, and happy Spring!
It's certainly shaping up to be a busy spring here in Boston, following
a busy winter! The UU Youth and Young Adult Advocacy Training and Lobby
Day was a huge success, involving 25 UU youth and young adults from
around the US. Participants practiced different skills and strategies
for advocacy around issues of comprehensive sexuality education and
multiculturalism, then spent a day on Capitol Hill lobbing members of
congress and gathering support for the REAL Act (Responsible Education
About Life Act, introduced by Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) and
Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)). This act would provide federal funding
for comprehensive sexuality education programs in the public schools
equal to that already provided to abstinence-only programs. For more
information about the REAL Act and how you can get involved, visit
http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/real.htm and
http://www.uua.org/ya-cm/youngadults/advocacy.html .
Another new program launched this winter is the Regional Youth and Young
Adult Anti-Racism Analysis Development Conferences, which took place in
three churches across the country during the month of February.
Altogether, about 200 youth and young adults participated in the three
conferences. We look forward to evaluating and fine tuning both of
these programs, and plans are already in the works to repeat them next
year. As usual, contact us at any time if you have any comments or
input.
In faith,
Petra Aldrich

3. New and Improved Virtual Tour of the UUA
=========================================================
See a bust of the Father of the Guy Who Wrote "Jingle Bells" (Unitarian
Minister John Pierpont), A painting of the African-American Universalist
Minister who's school for Black children attracted about three hundred
students a year (Universalist Minister Joseph Fletcher Jordan), and a
photograph of the UUA Presidents office! Take the New Virtual Tour of
the UUA! http://www.uua.org/aboutuua/tour/
Together with the buildings at 41 Mt. Vernon St. and the Pickett and
Eliot Houses at 6 & 7 Mt. Vernon Place, 25 Beacon serves as the national
headquarters for the UUA. These three Boston buildings house many of the
UUA's programs and services.
This virtual tour not only offers a view of the buildings, paintings,
and artifacts that make up the physical UUA headquarters, but also
briefly surveys the history of the association, and provides a glimpse
into what Unitarian Universalism stands for.

9. Casting Call: Mtv True Life: I Need God
=========================================================
True Life: I Need God
In an age of increasing anxiety and uncertainty young people are turning
to a higher power for many reasons.
Have you hit a low point in your life and are finally reaching a turning
point where you believe a divine being (God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha,
Krishna, etc.) is the only way out? Has something caused you to question
and start the search to a new spiritual path or religion? Have you
experienced a genuine miracle that has caused you to become a true
believer? Do you think that by turning to a higher power you can make
significant changes to your life?
On the other hand did you experience an event in your life that made you
doubt if there really is a spiritual higher power? Do you feel that your
religion has not been there for you when you needed it the most that has
caused you to question your faith?
True Life wants to explore the influence and search of religion in your
life from your voice and experiences. If you appear to be between the
ages of 16-28 and would like to share your story e-mail us at
miracle at mtvstaff.com.

10. Conference: Young People and Social Justice: Planting the Seeds for
Change ===============================================================
to be held at Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Saturday, April 9, 2005 (9am-ish until 8pm-ish)
The time has arrived! Registration is now open for the Young People
and Social Justice conference, featuring keynote speaker Jonathan Kozol,
a choice of over 25 workshops, and an amazing opportunity to meet
students, non-profit folks, teachers, clergy and academic types all who
care about planning the seeds of critical thought and social awareness
with young people.
This conference is designed for those who do or will work with young
people (older elementary age-college age) and are interested in ways to
bring social justice teaching into that work. There is a focus on those
who will work with young people in a context of a faith community,
although this is not an exclusive focus. The vision for the conference
is that it will serve as a hub to network and educate around the radical
idea that young people, when exposed to and educated about injustice and
inequality, can make a difference now and will be more likely to be
social justice advocates in the future.
We have 140 slots available at this conference and foresee a higher
demand than slots we have available. Therefore, we suggest that you
register early. We expect the registration to be full within the first
week of registration, so please, register early.
Questions? Email elizabethgish at yahoo.com . Due to the high volume of
inquiries, Elizabeth is only able to answer questions via email, not
phone.

11. Internship Opportunity: Work on Women's Issues at the UUA Washington
Office For Advocacy!
=========================================================
Applications are due April 18, 2005, for the UU Women's Federation Clara
Barton Internship in Women's Issues. The Clara Barton intern is part of
the UUA's Social Justice Internship program, located at the Washington
Office for Advocacy in Washington, DC. The goal of the UUA Social
Justice Internship Program is to combine service, learning, and faith
development in order to produce energetic young adults with the
professional skills and strength of character to be lifelong leaders in
Unitarian Universalism and working for social justice.
All of the Social Justice interns do advocacy work, direct service, and
theological reflection. The Clara Barton intern works on issues that
have a significant or disproportionate impact on women, which includes
reproductive freedom, sex education, and violence against women. The
direct service work is designed to engage interns in personal
relationships with local communities, in order to see how legislation
affects real people's lives at home and abroad. Theological
reflection--led by a UU minister--helps interns gain a deeper
understanding of how their work affects (and is affected by) their
personal and UU values.
Term and Pay: Internships last from late August 2005 through mid-August
2006. The yearly stipend is $28,000 with benefits (including health
insurance). Housing is not provided.
Qualifications: Applicants must be US citizens, Unitarian Universalists,
and 18 years old by the start of the internship. Priority will be given
to young adults, students and seminarians. Successful applicants will
have good writing skills; passion for both advocacy and theological
reflection; the ability to work independently; and some experience with
both a UU congregation or organization and some type of lobbying or
justice organizing.
For an application, see http://www.uua.org/uuawo/new/article.php?id=87.
