========================================================

1. Welcome from Petra Aldrich, Young Adult and Campus Ministry Office
Program Associate

=========================================================

Dear UU Young Adults & Allies,

Here is everything from last month, and more! Make sure you consider
applying for one of the C*UUYAN leadership positions up for election at
GA--you don't have to attend GA to run!

GA is days away, and we are all working very hard to prepare. Michael
Tino will be presenting a workshop about guiding youth into young
adulthood, orchestrating the Bridging Ceremony and the presentation of
the Anchor Congregation awards, and co-coordinating a number of
receptions. With representatives from the UUA Youth Office and
Washington Office for Advocacy, Michael will be co-presenting a second
workshop about the joint youth and young adult Legislative Advocacy
Project on comprehensive sex education, gender, and choice. Joseph
Santos-Lyons is organizing and participating in several workshops and
presentations on topics ranging from campus ministry to trans-racial
adoption, and with a number of different groups including the UU Men's
network and DRUUMM. Our office is especially excited to be working with
the Youth Office and the UUA Washington Office to bring youth activist
Shelby Knox to GA for a Q&A session following a screening of the
documentary "The Education of Shelby Knox." This documentary chronicles
Knox's efforts to institute of comprehensive sex education curriculum in
her high school in Lobbock, TX.

Your GA Young Adult Caucus staff has been working extremely hard to get
ready for our time in Ft. Worth. We are planning social events, daily
young adult/contemporary worships, anti-oppression workshops and
activities, discussion groups, and work relating to the business of
General Assembly. We are especially excited this year to be working more
closely with Interweave (the UU GBLTQ Organization) and with the UU
White Anti-Racist Ally's Organization. If you're coming to GA, make
sure you stop by our booth to pick up our daily GA Young Adult
Newsletter and see a complete schedule of young adult-related and Young
Adult Caucus-sponsored activities and events! You will find everything
from young adult meditation groups to late-night bowling expeditions to
anti-oppression dinner-and-a-movie events. We hope to see you there!

In faith,

6. Call for Applications for Global Leaders Summit
=========================================================

Globally conscious college and graduate students are invited to apply
for Bringing the World Home retreats being held in Maryland and Virginia
in July and August. The retreats will assemble student leaders from
across the U.S. for a weekend of workshops, speakers, and discussions
focused on techniques for raising global consciousness in the U.S.
Thanks to the generous support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the
Open Society Institute, the Hewlett Foundation, and the DarMac
Foundation, the weekend conferences are free for selected students
including food and lodging.

The Bringing the World Home retreats will take place over two weekends:

- July 2-3 in Emmitsburg, Maryland (Emmitsburg is 75 minutes from
Washington, D.C., and 3.5 hours from New York City)

- August 19-21 at Pocahontas State Park near Richmond, VA (Richmond is 2
hours from Washington, D.C.)

At the retreats, students will learn strategies for talking global
issues with Americans and techniques for organizing town hall meetings
on America's role in the world. Students will also have the opportunity
to meet and exchange ideas with a diverse group of young leaders,
equipping them with the knowledge, support and structure to implement
these ideas in their neck of the woods. The retreats will also feature a
panel discussion on postgraduate opportunities in international affairs
and guest lectures on U.S. foreign policy.

The retreats are being coordinated by Americans for Informed Democracy
(AID), a non-partisan organization working to raise global awareness on
more than 250 U.S. university campuses and in more than 10 countries.
AID was originally started in September of 2002 by Marshall and Rhodes
scholars at Oxford University who sought a new vehicle to bring the
world home to Americans and it has quickly become the premiere network
for globally conscious young leaders. For more information about AID,
including stories about the group by the New York Times, Washington
Post, CNN, and others, visit http://www.aidemocracy.org/.

Interested students should send a resume and a note identifying which
retreat they prefer to application at aidemocracy.org. Applications will be
considered on a rolling basis and applicants will be notified within 48
hours of submission if they have been selected to attend a summit. To
learn more about Bringing the World Home, see summaries of our recent
Spring 2005 and Winter 2004 retreat series. Questions? Call us at 202
270 6268 or e-mail application at aidemocracy.org.

Please note: Americans for Informed Democracy will do its best to
arrange car pools for students without transportation coming from nearby
cities such as Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York.

7. REGISTER FOR OPUS AND CONCENTRIC 2005!

========================================================

Yes folks, that's right! Online registration for Opus and ConCentric
2005 is Officially OPEN!

Register TODAY on the Opus and ConCentric event pages at
www.connectuu.com <http://www.connectuu.com/> , and don't forget to
check out Expressions in Color, the pre-Opus People of Color retreat!

Opus 2005: Who We Art: Spirituality and Art in the Heartland
How do you express the sacred? How do you divulge your thoughts of the
divine? Do you dance to convey your convictions or do you write to
relinquish emotions? Does song seep out of you or do you find solace in
the sciences? Whatever the mode, it is often our desire to find ways to
express what our spirituality means to us. Come join us at Who We Art:
Spirituality and Art in the Heartland, this year's theme for OPUS 2005,
the C*UUYAN annual spiritual retreat. Here we will discover how we
practice the sacred and the artist that lies within us as well as
unknown gifts we possess, yet to be unearthed.

ConCentric 2005: Weaving Our Web: Developing Interconnections Within and
Beyond ConCentric is the annual meeting of C*UUYAN, the Continental
Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network. Young adults are helping to
lead our spiritual movement to become more radically inclusive and
justice-centered. This year's conference will encourage and help UU
young adult leaders to develop a sense of well-being in ourselves, our
communities, and the world. Come join other UU young adult leaders at
Camp Hantesa near Boone, Iowa where we will weave together, ways of
strengthening our young adult movement. District representatives and
participants will have an opportunity to network with each other and
learn from the experiences of other UU Young Adults and the work they
are doing in their congregations, districts and regions. This years
workshops will be focused on developing strong local YA groups and
connecting with each other on a national and international scale. We
will focus on strengthening our inner-spiritual being in order to give
us strength to foster our movement beyond ourselves and our current
congregations. Join with us this August to Weave a strong Web that will
ensure the continued success of our continental young adult movement.

Expressions in Color: A People of Color Pre-Opus Event:

In the spirit of love and justice we extend a warm welcome to Young
Adults of Color to a pre-Opus overnight retreat in calm Iowa. Our vision
is to nurture connections, improve our ability to express ourselves and
continue to build positive race relations. Led by DRUUMM Young Adults,
this 24 hour event promises to be rich in dialogue, creative work and
peace making.

10. Youth Delegation to Palestine/Isreal

=========================================================

YOUTH DELEGATION TO PALESTINE/ISRAEL

August 15 - 23, 2005

www.binakehilla.org

Do you want to visit the Holy Land-whatever your religious
identity-with a diverse group of like-minded youth? Do you have a
proven history of social justice work? Do you want to meet with
peace-activists and policy-makers in the Middle East as a part of
formulating a balanced, equitable end to the Occupation? Are you willing
to bring your experience back to your community as another step in the
fight for justice? Do you temper idealism with common sense and good
humor?

Join the Bina Kehilla Palestine-Israel delegation. Bina Kehilla is
Arabic

for building & Hebrew for community. As our name suggests, we are

seeking to build community and good will between all sides of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The trip is not about tourism and
kibbutzim, nor is it about vilification or patronization. This is an
expedition to truly explore the injustices that exist in
Israel-Palestine today, and to bear witness to these injustices in our
own communities as a part of enabling a lasting peace.

We are dedicated to providing an informative, intensive, and balanced
view of the situation in Palestine-Israel. On this trip, you will meet
with a range of people, from activists to settlers, all of whom are
grappling with potential solutions to the current hostilities. You will
be a part of a diverse group of young peace-activists; who will bring
their own ideas, passion, and expertise to the table.

Parts of the trip will be intense. You will not be standing in front of
bulldozers or facing off with armed guards, but you will see,
firsthand, the privations that water-theft has wreaked on Hebron, be
subject to checkpoint security, and meet people who have been
physically and psychologically damaged by the conflict.

It will not be all struggle and strife. There will be time to take part
in Tel Aviv night-life, to explore the beauties that Jerusalem has to
offer, and to simply enjoy the company of other young activists.

11. The 2005 (YAEF): Young Adult Ecumenical Forum on Globalization &
Poverty

=========================================================

Who: Ecumenical Young Adults (ALL denominational and
non-denominational backgrounds are welcome! Young adults from countries
outside of the US are equally encouraged to apply.)

Where: Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri

When: August 11 - 14, 2005 (12:00 pm Thursday through 12:00 pm
Sunday)

Cost: $45 registration fee/lodging/meals

$35 registration fee/meals (for participants who can provide
their own lodging)

Participants must arrange their own transportation. Some need-based
travel

assistance is available. Think about sponsorship from your church!

Purpose: The YAEF is a grassroots, collaborative response to the lack
of programming for young adults. The mission of the 2005 Young Adult
Ecumenical Forum on Globalization and Poverty is two-fold: First, we
will critically examine issues of contemporary concern within the
context of the American Church. Second, we will use this contemporary
issue as a means to empower young adult, ecumenical leaders. We will
create space for dialogue rather than dogma, and together, visualize the
role that justice-driven young adults can take within the church.

Local Projects: The YAEF started as a "local project," which its
organizers brought back from a 2003 World Council of Churches Stewards
event in Geneva. Similarly, the 2005 YAEF was planned by participants
of the 2004 YAEF. Likewise, forum participants will envision some way
to take their experiences back home and act upon them. As faithful
believers, we recognize that education and discernment must be
accompanied with obedient action.

Key Note Speakers :

Dr. Reverend Larry Bropleh World Council of Churches Representative to
the UN

Dr. Daniel Deffenbaugh Professor of Religion, Hastings College

Wilson Dickinson Vanderbilt Theology Student & 2004 YAEF
