1. Welcome from Joseph Santos-Lyons, Director of Campus Ministry and
Field Organizing
=========================================================
Dear Community,
2005 draws to a close with much emotion. Many of us are drained by
world events such as Hurricane Katrina, Pakistani Earthquake, War on
Iraq and our own personal tragedies. All of us I pray are sustained,
renewed and transformed by our relationship with Unitarian Universalism,
our spiritual development, our always growing consciousness about
G*d/Spirit of Life and Creation. Thanks to all who give leadership to
our communities and our people.
I will be working closely with our Regional Organizing Consultants to
sponsor info tables at District Conferences, outreach for Radius
regional C*UUYAN meetings, visioning for taking the next BIG step for
Campus Ministry, and organizing with our Young Adults of Color in
Chicago March 2-5.
Stay connected, stay warm, stay healthy, stay in relationship. May
peace guide and hold you during our December days.
Joseph Santos-Lyons
Director Campus Ministry & Field Organizing

2. Letter from Dave "Evad" Leppik of the C*UUYAN Steering Committee
=========================================================
Dear C*UUYAN,
Each month, a member of the Steering Committee writes to let you know
what we're up to. Although each of us has been busy with different
things, as a committee November was a quiet month. Planning continues
for the Radius conferences-- regional leadership development conferences
which will occur this spring.
Here's a little background, for those of you who weren't at ConCentric
this year. When I joined C*UUYAN in the early 1990s-- I was 19, now I'm
33-- it was a grassroots organization. That is, it was member funded,
with only informal ties to the Unitarian Universalist Association. We
had a grand vision to build a spiritual home for all UUs in the nomadic
age range we call young adulthood, and to transform UUism in the
process. The smaller our resources, the bigger our dreams could be:
without the means to achieve them, there was little accountability.
Just before the turn of the century, we became a sponsored organization
of the UUA: they pay our bills, but then they expect us to live up to
our dreams. So we're working on ways to be more accountable, yet keep
our grassroots spirit.
The traditional spiritual center of C*UUYAN is the Opus and ConCentric
pair of conferences every August. When C*UUYAN was too humble for its
dreams, we could afford to ignore the fact that we'll never get a
significant percentage of our constituents-- all UU young adults between
18 and 35-- to be at one place at the same time. Intentional
community, in which we strive to provide a setting where we all feel
comfortable shedding our masks and expressing our whole selves, is a
powerful force for inspiration and mature vision. It has given C*UUYAN
zeal while protecting it from zealotry. So how do we keep intentional
community while expanding the number of participants.
One option is to have more conferences, and to make them regional. A
group of people came to ConCentric last year with a proposal to have
regional ConCentrics every other year. While a lot of work had already
gone into this, the consensus was that we're not ready to change our
governance model: a consensus-based business meeting at ConCentric. So
the plan is to have regional leadership development conferences-- Radius
conferences-- and once they are thriving, we can revisit our governance
model.
So Radius might be the beginning of another chapter in the history of
C*UUYAN, or it might be just a great way to train new leaders. We'll
just have to see where this grand experiment takes us.
You can see that I think big. I could have just recounted last
ConCentric, but instead I gave a history of C*UUYAN. So what are my big
thoughts about C*UUYAN's future? What is my vision?
As I get to the end of my years as a young adult, I have come to realize
that the ideal C*UUYAN would be nearly redundant. In my vision,
congregations would be so multigenerational and inclusive that the
transition from youth to young adulthood and then beyond would be
seamless. C*UUYAN would really only be needed in the times and places
where a congregation can't reach: far flung college campuses, military
bases, prisons, and the nomadic years when you change your residence
nearly as often as your underwear.
In my vision, there would be millions of UUs in America. Outspoken UUs
would bring compassion and reason to every public debate, religious or
secular. And we would have the resources and visibility to truly bring
hope, comfort, and community to all those who cannot find it in other
religions. Right now, our religion is too small and too quiet to live
up to our potential. But we only have to grow by a few percentage
points per year to achieve this within 20 years.
In my vision, all of the reasons that UUs drop out of the faith in their
late teens and early 20s would go away: they would feel at home in
congregations, and there would be a community of UUs wherever they went.
And anybody of any age who needs what UUism
has to offer would know who we are and where to find us.
C*UUYAN has made incredible progress since I joined it. We have a seat
at the table at the UUA, and young adult ministry is on the agenda in
places where it used to be unknown. Thanks to online resources such as
the Church of the Younger Fellowship (uucyf.org) and fUUse.com, young
adults in far-flung places don't need to feel alone. While most of
these aren't direct C*UUYAN action, it has been the catalyst for much of
the change.
What's your vision? Tell us at ideas at uuyan.org or post it to
fUUse.com.
In the spirit,
Dave "evaD" Leppik (david at leppik.net)
