A discussion list for YAs interested in C*UUYAN's continental structure. THis is the proposal we are discussing.
Proposal to restructure C*UUYAN Caucusing Structure
Ella Hereth, March 2003
Critique of our caucus structure from USSA (United States Student
Association)
USSA is a national student organization that works on issues of access to education and diversity. USSA has a large and complicated caucus structure. You can learn more about their caucus structure at
http://www.usstudents.org/about/caucuses.asp. In the process of planning caucuses at Concentric, I asked USSA leadership (president Jo'ie Taylor and USSA UW-Madison students) what they thought of our past models of caucusing.
They had two main concerns:
1. There is no continuous dialogue or community within any of the caucus groups. For example, there might be a women's caucus that meets at GA and then at Opus but they are generally separate groups that have no communication with each other. USSA suggests that we create sustainable dialogue among caucus groups. Some ways they have been successful in doing this are by creating email lists, planning retreats, electing co-chairs, and hosting conference calls)
2. There are no structures of accountability built into historically
dominant identity group caucuses (ex. White ID group, straight ID group, male ID group). For example, USSA doesn't have a white identity caucus. Instead they have a white allies meeting that is facilitated by a person of color that has significant experience doing anti-racism work and is actively involved in the continuous dialogue of USSA people of color.
Suggestions for C*UUYAN:
1. Creation of caucus listserves for people of color, women, transgendered, queer, and YAs with disabilities. Others-YA parents? Working class?
2. These listserves will be advertised online and at GA, Concentric, and Opus 2003 (particularly in the caucuses).
3. That white id, straight id, and male id caucuses be replaced by allies meetings. (Discussion of how to include trans ally work-trans ally meeting?), facilitated by someone from the appropriate caucus.
4. Conference Calls between the Anti-Oppression Coordinators at GA,
ConCentric, and Opus and the ID Group facilitators at each of these conferences to help facilitate communication. (example women's caucus leaders at GA are in communication with Anti-Oppression Coordinators and caucus leaders at ConCentric and Opus)
Questions:
How to include all of the caucuses in the space of one weekend at something like ConCentric? Maybe we would rotate caucusing at ConCentric and include two different ones each year and the other three caucuses would meet at Opus, while all Caucuses still meet
